Fuerteventura is an island where good weather and wonderful beaches are accompanied by a splendid cultural offer. In this destination you will find numerous centres where you can get to know in depth the traditions and ways of life of the people of Fuerteventura. On this occasion, it is time to tell you about Fuerteventura’s must-see museums.
Majorero cheese is one of the great delicacies of the Canary Islands. Its flavour and texture are unmistakable, and at the Majorero Cheese Museum we have the opportunity to discover the origin and production of this product, as well as its great influence on the development of the island. But the truth is that this is a very versatile museum and here we can also admire beautiful gardens, the Antigua mill and, surprisingly enough, milk a mechanical goat.
In the old Puerto de Cabras, a centre pays homage to the passage of the eternal Miguel de Unamuno through Fuerteventura for five months. A beautiful house with wooden finishes, large curtains and period appliances such as a typewriter or phonograph.
El Cotillo is one of Fuerteventura’s fishing areas. It is therefore not surprising that the Museum of Traditional Fishing, which you will find by the Tostón lighthouse, is located here. As the Fuerteventura Island Council (Cabildo de Fuerteventura) tells us, here we will discover the deep links between the people of Fuerteventura and the sea since prehistoric times.
The history of the Salinas del Carmen is closely linked to that of the island. For this reason, another of Fuerteventura’s essential museums is the one that pays tribute to this place in Antigua, which takes us back to its period of greatest splendour. You will learn about the history of the Canary Island salt flats in general, and those of El Carmen in particular. We will also learn how salt is obtained and the peculiarities of the Saltadero del Carmen.
We end this tour of Fuerteventura’s museums with the Archaeological Museum. Located in the historic and beautiful village of Betancuria, in this centre we will learn about the legacy of the ancient aborigines of Fuerteventura. Here the religious customs of the majos, their culture and strategies for surviving in a land that was difficult to cultivate are reconstructed.
