Agaete, a white village among wild mountains

If you have never been to Agaete, you are missing out on one of the jewels of Gran Canaria, located in an exceptional setting.

In the northwest of Gran Canaria and 30 kilometres from the capital, we find a unique village that enchants all tourists who visit it. The coastal aroma and white colour of Agaete are unmistakable, making it one of the essential destinations if you travel to the island.

Probably the most spectacular thing is its location. A town that rests on the slopes of ravines, as the abrupt topography of the municipality is well known. This means that the mountains are steep and the massif towards the sea has a vertiginous descent.

Undoubtedly, a village in a wild enclave in which we must highlight, above all, three large basins: Guayedra, Agaete and El Risco. Next to the sea lie the little houses with white façades and blue doors that give life to the village. Here you will find remarkable mansions with 19th century courtyards, the church of La Concepción and the Huerto de las Flores, the municipality’s botanical garden. When you pass through the town, don’t miss the opportunity to taste the famous Agaete coffee or buy a small packet to enjoy at home.

Of course, we cannot talk about Agaete without talking about Puerto de las Nieves, the tourist lung of the town and a splendid place to enjoy the seafood gastronomy offered by the restaurants in the area or to clear your mind admiring the sea. Dozens of boats rest here every day and tourists are delighted to walk along the promenade, which you can access by climbing some stairs. As a curiosity, the Fred. Olsen Express ferries depart from this port to other Canary Islands.

As you will have guessed from what we have said about its mountains, Agaete is a destination that also stands out for its natural landscapes. Sunbathing on the rocky Playa de las Nieves beach is one of the best plans, as well as breathing the fresh air of the Pinar de Tamadaba pine forest or taking a dip in Las Salinas de Agaete, a beautiful natural swimming pool. You shouldn’t miss other beaches either, such as Guayedra or El Risco, on the outskirts of the municipality.
